•Why are web standards a good idea?

They ensure that visitors to your site can view your content no matter what their circumstances. Whether they are partially sighted or using the latest browser, web standards ensure that your site can be viewed optimally by the maximum number of users. Using CSS, XHTML and PHP we can ensure your site renders quickly and benefits from the latest design features and internet technology. If you'd like to know more you can visit the web standards project FAQs for further information.

Non-standard?

Occasionally we will use some non-standards compliant code. For example on this site we use the proposed CSS3 property "opacity" even though it is not supported by some (older) browsers. Such features are used in a way that enhances the experience for those with modern browsers.

Limits of support

Browsers

There are literally thousands of browsers! We can only support the main browsers and even then we must take an approach of graceful degradation (see wikipedia entry).

Currently we test our sites using:

Default testing platforms and applications.
Operating SystemBrowser versions and notes
MacOS X
Safari Camino
Windows XP
Opera 8 Firefox 1.5 Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 7 (beta) Emulator for JAWS
Linux (kernel 2.6; Slackware 10)
Opera 8 Firefox 1.5 Mozilla Konqueror Text-based browsers: lynx.

Of course we will design your site to ensure compatibility with whatever other browsers you specify and test accordingly.

You're the boss

We are committed to web standards and so design your site to the highest standards that your budget will allow. Ensuring conformance with a particular standard can be costly. So, we won't strain your budget by trying to attain a particular compliance unless you wish.

•Search engines?

A further benefit of our implementation of your site is that is panders closely to the needs of the most prevalent search engines to ensure your page will be ranked as highly as possible. Search engine rankings can never be guarranteed but using our years of web experience we can squeeze the best possible rankings from your content. High rankings mean more visitors, more visitors mean more interest generated for your business, agency or group.

We strive to attain the WCAG triple-A (ie 'AAA') self certified conformance ratings for accessibility developed by the WAI. For full accessibility evaluation and conformance we follow closely the W3 / WAI guidelines. Most pages on the Brodge Hosting site are certified as double-A (ie 'AA') at least. We check our site against other prevalent standards such as the US government's Section 508 Standards.
